Artist Statement
My medium of choice is colored pencils. Some of my favorite subjects include western landscapes, petrogylphs, and birds. I like to spend time in these western landscapes hiking. While tramping around I take photographs as I go for reference materials used to create a final piece of art work. I look for strong shadows when taking reference photos. I prefer to use multiple layers of colored pencil for the desired effect. There is something about how the layers effect each other color wise that fascinates me. Sometimes I might use as many as six different color layers. I work on a musuem board which is a cross between a good drawing paper and cold press board. The las t step is spraying a light fixative over the artwork. Many of my large landscapes can take several monthes to finish. I have always loved to color, starting at an early age with the 64 color box of crayons. So,... I have great patience with large landscapes!
I recently retired from 27 years of teaching elementary art. While teaching I created an award wining program recognized at the state and national level. I am looking forward to spending more time doing my own creating!
